Contrast between Nagoya and Tokyo
I'm Japanese, who has lived almost entire of my life. Never had I crossed prefectural borders since last October, this travel was exciting to me.
I headed to Tokyo, it was because I would attend the social gathering of Bookshort. Book short is an organisation of short story movies. They organise several competitions for writers almost all year round. So we, writers join the competitions.
As for the social gathering, they invited only all kinds of winners including the champions. For me, I Not reaching even the semi final, I could attend the gathering for my passing the first stage.
I'll get back the story about what I hadn't travel anywhere. It is because I found an interesting contrast between Tokyo and Nagoya, where I live.
In this time, my impression of Tokyo has more FREEDOM than Nagoya. Actually I have known it but I came to unconscious about it. Once you get used to living in Nagoya, it might be comfortable. You just follow their culture.
In Nagoya, too CONSERVATIVE, which makes me (maybe not only me but also others) bored. Keeping standing before crossing road until the traffic light turns blue even though none of cars passes or is never likely to pass the road. Most people smoke in public or cafes. In Nagoya, we have big enterprises. Many people are associated with that. If you give a bad impression to them, you might be hard to live here. For example, if you speak out opposition of nuclear weapons or plants, it might be disadvantage of your life. It is because you benefit from them. They offer you a job and stable income. You cannot betray them. Or you cannot help feeling that. Feeling only the way to survive to work for such a stable organisation, you have no idea if you lose it. And in another aspect of Nagoya, Many cafes ban customers from smoking. If you break those things, people will see you as an odd person. Also they often trust famous brands. It takes time to get trust from them. If I regard Nagoya as a person, I think Nagoya is well behaved student. It might be boring, but there will no mistakes.
From those reasons, it might be hard to live in Nagoya first. But once you get along with the people, it is very comfortable to live.
On the other hand, in Tokyo, people get to accept you sooner than Nagoya. They are already get used to communicate with outsiders because they are too. I found out people in Tokyo, whose way of thinking is more wider. They judge which is good or bad, it should be done or not should be done. It is a good example of this that waiting until GO before the crossing road inspire of none of cars passing. In Tokyo, they cross the road even though it is illegal because there will never be likely for any cars to pass. Another example is some people apparently express their opinions. For example, I found the flyer in front of the dry cleaning shop. It was about the co
ncert with a strong message of opposition of wars. I think it comes from their flexible thinking. If you like to do something, just do it. I think that is their motto to live there. Anyway, life is fun, you should enjoy your life. That is what I feel here in Tokyo. (Maybe, some do not conscious in Tokyo...) If I give an example just like Nagoya, I think Tokyo is a gambler or a little bit fantasied mind student.
I described value of life from two sides between Tokyo and Nagoya. Now I like both in almost the same degree.
I'll write about Tokyo more soon.
